Jump shot the kenny sailors story. This video pissed me off so I wrote an essay. naismith became an American citizen in 1925, 34 years after he invented the game. At least 10 of the students in the game were university students from Quebec. the idea that baseball was invented in the US is also a myth based off a 1838 baseball game in beachville, Ontario. This is agreed upon by John Thorne, the official historian for MLB. Finally, American football originated from two games between harvard university and Canadian McGill university in 1874. the first game was played using harvard's rules, which involved a round ball and was more like soccer. the second game was played using McGill's rules which used an oval ball. the Canadian rules introduced ' downs' and tackling to the game as well. Americans tend to cite a game that occurred a year later between harvard and yale as the start of American football, though the game was played using the Canadian rules. so there, Canada invented all your sports.

Jump Shot: The Kenny Sailors story 4. Late-night entertainment talk radio podcast from Indianapolis featuring interviews and topics that other shows won't talk about. Live on every Thursday at 8pm Eastern. Podcast replayed through the week on Indy In-Tune, the 405 Media and RadioMaxMusic. Part of the Couch Potato Nation network. We talk about John's personal trainer, National Novel Writing Month, Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon, Pasta with the Police, drug busts, and the song "My Dog Jesus" by CJ Watson. We also expose the lyrics to the Cops theme song, and ask a very important question about Snowpiercer that no one else is asking: Why does this movie look so weird? Posted: November 2, 2015, 3:21 am John Cox is a badass longshoreman with some of the wildest sea stories ever told. He's written these stories into a one-man play called The Money Fi$h that he is performing himself at The Hudson Theatres in Los Angeles. We talk with John about hiding condoms in piggy banks, punching his step-dad in the face at age 13, military recruiters, immigrants coming out of a shipping box, a wild sailor named Junior, nearly dying numerous times out at sea, flying hooks mutilating his friends, Russian pirates, the terrifying 40-foot swells, and how fishing in the Bearing Sea is way harder than being in the military. John Cox Links Female Condom or Diaphragm? We also talk about one-man plays and how they aren't performed out here in the Midwest,, and John has female condom/diaphragm confusion. Author: Chris Brake Show Posted: October 26, 2015, 3:24 am Carl Russo, author of The Sicilian Mafia: A True Crime Travel Guide, traveled to all the Italian Mafia hotspots in Sicily and took photos of where the godfathers lived, where various Mafia murders took place, and where they buried their victims. Carl tells us what he learned about the Mafia while poking around taking photos in Cosa Nostra. We hear about the Sicilian Mafia's infiltration of Italian health care, agriculture, and other basic areas of life, how the Sicilian Mafia has transportation contracts with local Italian government, and most importantly - how he got away with publishing this book without getting whacked. (Hint: try finding a photograph of Carl Russo! ) Chris Brake Show EXCLUSIVE Carl also tells us an exclusive story about Downtown Palermo that almost didn't turn out so well for our hero, and a blog post he wrote that exposed a Mafia wedding. We also blow the lid off of Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi’s underage sex parties, having models on his cabinet, and too much bunga bunga. Curse of the 40 Oz. Pimp Every time we have 40 on the Chris Brake Show, it's always a travesty trying to get him on Skype. Every time. This time it was so bad that it spilled over into the live show! We get 40 to reveal the secret hiding place live on the show, and you won't believe where it is. The New Job 40's got a new job at a tattoo shop called Evolution, but it's not what you'd expect. Or maybe you would expect it. But I know I sure didn't. The New Album (CP5) 40's writing songs and doing cardio to get ready for some shows. 40 tells us about one of the new tracks, "The 40 Oz. Jump Shot: The Kenny Sailors story

Actually BasketBall was invented a 1000 years ago by the Mayans and the Aztecs. They played with a rubber ball. Mr. Naismith just added the final ingredients to make Basketball what it is today. It was invented by a Canadian not an American Eh. Jump Shot: The Kenny Sailors story 2. I love this video for how short it was. And here i was, thinking I was gonna watch a nice little video about basketball, and ended up getting stuck in a jesus trap, well played, christians. I spent several years of my life growing up in Gakona Alaska. I was privileged to know Mr. Sailors and his wife. I knew him as the man who invented the Jump shot back in the mid 70's. Its sad it took so long for him to be recognized. He'd only talk about his career in sports if you asked him but he would always freely express his love for the Lord. What a cool guy.

Back for another great gaming event, TooManyGames 2018 was an amazing weekend filled with fun events, great music and of course, games. TMG is a staple in the gaming convention circuit in the East Coast, running for over 15 years as a simple gaming swap meets to a large gaming hub. Currently located in Oaks, PA at The Greater Philadelphia Expo Center, TMG houses a huge community of gamers that come nationwide to attend. With three full days of events and activities, TMG offered everything a nerd would want. There were content creators to meet, indie games to try, arcade classics to try and merch tables to browse through. And lastly, awesome people to meet along the way. We had a blast checking out all the sights, and our recap only captures just some of what we did. This year’s theme was based on Nintendo’s Mario, and to celebrate the theme they got two voice actors from the series. The special guests this year was Charles Martinet and Kenny James, the voice actors of Mario and Bowser respectively. These guys have been in the industry for some time now, lending their voices across multiple titles and different characters. Gamers from the 1990’s definitely grew up hearing these guys laugh, scream and roar in almost every Mario title. Showfloor Highlights With a large vendor hall, there were lots of nerdy collectibles to see on sale and indie games to play. There were specialty booths like the Monster Energy booth that handed out free monster drinks during the whole day, which gave us the caffeine rush we needed to sort through the whole place. Super Sox Shop Known for her oversize nerdy Christmas stockings, Gina’s Super Sox Shop offers soft plushy crafts inspired by pop nerd culture. We stopped by the Super Sox Shop booth to chat with Gina and look at her new wares she sewed up. One the sock display was a fuzzy purple sock, a Garnet from Steven Universe, the phone booth from Doctor Who, Usagi from Sailor Moon, and a Creeper from Minecraft. Operation Supply Drop At the Operation Supply Drop, an organization that sends nerdy gifts to USA troops, we heard about their latest charity events. They were also offering a small challenge to be the top gamer in their Halo tournament that gave out small prizes. We actually received a ration, which we heard wasn’t bad tasting. This organization is a great resource to help gamers connect and supports a good cause, so definitely worth checking out at conventions if you see them. Screenwave Media We checked out Screenwave Media’s indie game booth that contained playable demos of their latest games they published such as Meme Machine, Spook’s Jump Scare Mansion, Use Your Words. We checked out an early version of Meme Machine last Pax East, since then the final version was released on June 22nd, 2018. The final version contained more characters, tighter controls, and the same internet silliness. This booth also had a live stream booth where gamers would throw on a stream and talk about their convention experience. RedEssenceGames The dev team at RedEssenceGames have been working hard on building their first major title Mask of Semblance. We have met the team over the year on our convention trips and it’s been great watching this game grow every time. Mask of Semblance is an action adventure title that features glorious hand-drawn art and fast-paced combat. The gameplay follows the traditional hack and slack game mechanics and has fluid controls to jump in and out of combat easily. Lining up attacks and unleashing combines feels fun and the art style is colorful to keep the eyes entertained. This game is in early development and the demo can be downloaded now. Nicholas Hydock Nicholas Hydock offers a different take on the randomly generated, rogue-lite, dungeon crawler game experience in his game C:raft. The game’s structure use’s the host’s computer file system to dictate how C:raft will be generated. C:raft will analyze the host computer and create a special game design that features randomly generated items, levels, and quest that is based on the host computer. The gameplay and art style is simplistic in black and white. The controls are very basic, using very few inputs. In fact, the C:raft highlights that the game is great to play with a beer in one hand and one on the keyboard or tablet. Paralily The developers working on Paralilly have presented another build of their game, updating what we played during our time at AVGC early in the year. Paralilly stars Patches, a little girl that’s on a quest to rescue her lost stuffed dragon that is lost between realities. Patches must shift between parallel universes to navigate obstacles, solve puzzles and avoid dangers. Wimbus Studios The team over at Wimbus Studios has always been one of our favorite stops at TMG. Their game, The Island of Eternal Struggle, takes inspirations from classic turn-based RPGs like Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest, and mix it with their own unique humor. They had made Steam early access last year and working towards improving their game. Mega Cat studios When it comes to being a triple threat, Mega Cats Studios doesn’t mess around. Not only do they make their own games, but they published their games digitally and in retro formats. They make games they always wanted to make as kids and aim to make them a tab stranger. Their latest game, Coffee Crisis, is their take on the beat’em up genre and was loads of fun to play when we got our hands on a review copy a few months ago. They were showing off their latest updates for the PC version and were showing off their game catalog at their booths. Cosplay Pro-Wrestling When’s the last time you saw Mario punch Sora, while a Mr. Game and Watch moves in for a cheap shot at their groins. The nimble and talented geeky wrestles at Cosplay Pro-Wrestling know how to pump up the crowds while dressed as fan-favorite characters. They not only embodied the spirit of their character persona’s, they perform heart-stopping wrestling moves that get the wrestling fan in everyone cheering. Their shows are fun and we also have a good time screaming and boo-ing for our heroes and villains. Pole Pole Pole Our favorite booth. It was a sign about a pole, placed next to a pole, to warn others about a pole. Panels Panels held through the hours of TooManyGames discuss a wide range of nerdy interest. Some talk about their experience being a content creator, analyzing games, or show off a strange performance piece. There were three rooms that ran a new panel every hour, so you can hop around all day listening to random topics and some amusing feedback from the crowds. Completely Unnecessary Podcast Pat the NES Punk and Ian Furguson look back at their past experiences about their podcast, their gaming collection and fun stories about traveling to conventions and meeting some strange characters along the way. Dais of Thunder – Roast of Pac-Man The comedians of Dais of Thunder dress as classic gaming icons to hold a not so friendly roast for the yellow dot-eater, Pac-Man. It’s a fun concept for gamers that know the characters well and the room was packed. Hack The Movies – Best Batman Games Panel and Harley Quinn Cosplay Contest Parodying cosplay panels, Hack The Movies hosted a batman appreciation panel that goes off the rails. This is what happens when only one Harley Quinn cosplayer appears and an unhealthy obsession with Chris O’Donnell becomes a cringe worthy panel discussion. Concerts Through the TMG, the concert room held different musicians playing a set for attend to check out. Each musician brought something different for the audience to hear, so it’s never the same band twice. They played rock, chiptunes, heavy metal, punk and all mixes of music genre in between to be heard in the concert room. Nerd Surge Knights of the Round Kenzie Black Free Play A large selection of TooManyGames is their collection of arcade and console free play area. This room hosted tons of games to play throughout the three days. They had Japanese import candy cabs, musical games, pinball and classic retro hits. Their console area offered a random assortment of games for anyone to jump in and play. The area in the back held Smash brothers and Overwatch tournaments that brings more competitive gamers to fight for prizes and nerd respect. Parties A long day at a con deserves an even longer rest period. We kicked back the nights with friends and new acquaintances at the hotel bar and ballroom. On Friday night, we got to chill at the Screenwave media party to sing along with some off-key karaoke singers while having a drink or two (Or five). Saturday night we got to see DJ Cutman perform and try to keep our drink count in the single digits. Partying all night is fun, but cost sleep, so we try not to rage until the morning light. We still had Sunday for our last chance on good game deals and attend a panel. So our morning was a quick Wawa breakfast hoogie to help our recovery and one last trip through the show floor. The Morning After This year’s TooManyGames was another great convention experience that gave us tons of stuff to do all weekend. It was hard to find a boring moment when we were surrounded by so many options to chose. We enjoyed every moment snapping pics, talking to people, and digging through vendor tables. TooManyGames brings together a great community of geeks and nerds and we look forward to our time back next summer.

Directed by James Frawley and produced by Jim Henson, the film's screenplay was conceived by The Muppet Show writers Jerry Juhl and Jack Burns. An American and British venture produced by Henson Associates and ITC Entertainment between the first half and the second half of The Muppet Show ' s third season, the film depicts Kermit the Frog as he embarks on a cross-country trip to Hollywood. Along the way, he encounters several of the Muppets—who all share the same ambition of finding success in professional show business—while being pursued by Doc Hopper, an evil restaurateur with intentions of employing Kermit as a spokesperson for his frog legs business. In addition to the Muppet performers, the film stars Charles Durning and Austin Pendleton, and features cameo appearances by Dom DeLuise, James Coburn, Edgar Bergen (in his final film appearance), Steve Martin, and Mel Brooks, among others. Notable for its surreal humour, meta-references and prolific use of cameos, The Muppet Movie was released in the United Kingdom on May 31, 1979, and in the United States on June 22, 1979, and received critical praise; including two Academy Award nominations for Paul Williams and Kenneth Ascher 's musical score and their song, " Rainbow Connection ". In 2009, the film was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. The success of The Muppet Movie led to several other feature films starring the Muppets: The Great Muppet Caper (1981), The Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992), Muppet Treasure Island (1996), Muppets from Space (1999), The Muppets (2011) and Muppets Most Wanted (2014). Plot [ edit] The film begins with the Muppets sitting down at a private screening to watch a movie that tells the story of how they all met. Kermit the Frog lives a simple life in a Florida swamp. One day, he enjoys an afternoon playing his banjo and singing " Rainbow Connection ", when he is approached by Bernie, a talent agent who encourages Kermit to pursue a career in show business before being chased away by a nearby alligator. Inspired by the idea of "making millions of people happy", Kermit sets off on a cross-country trip to L. A., but is soon pursued by entrepreneur Doc Hopper and his assistant Max, who attempt to convince Kermit to be the new spokesman of Hopper's struggling french-fried frog legs restaurant franchise. Unwilling to accept Kermit's refusal, Hopper resorts to increasingly insane means of persuasion. Kermit meets Fozzie Bear, working as a hapless stand-up comedian, and invites him on his journey. The two set out in Fozzie's 1951 Studebaker. They meet the rock band Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem and their manager Scooter in an old church, who receive a copy of the film's script from the pair. They meet and are joined by Gonzo and his girlfriend Camilla the Chicken. They trade in their failing vehicle at a used car lot, where they meet Sweetums. They invite him to come with them, but he runs away. Thinking he does not want to come, the others drive away only for Sweetums to come back out and reveal that he had only run away to pack his things. The group also meets Miss Piggy at a county fair, and she immediately becomes love-stricken with Kermit. While Kermit and Miss Piggy form a relationship over dinner that night, Hopper and Max kidnap Miss Piggy as bait to lure Kermit. Using an electronic "cerebrectomy" device, mad scientist Professor Krassman tries to brainwash Kermit into performing in Hopper's advertisements, but an enraged Miss Piggy knocks out Hopper's henchmen and causes Krassman to be brainwashed by his own device. However, Miss Piggy receives a job offer, and promptly abandons a devastated Kermit. Joined later by Rowlf the Dog and reunited with Miss Piggy, the Muppets continue their journey to Hollywood, but their car breaks down in the desert. Sitting at a campfire, the group sadly realizes that they will likely miss the audition the next day. Kermit wanders off, ashamed for bringing his friends on a fruitless journey, but some personal reflection restores his commitment. He returns to camp, where The Electric Mayhem find the stranded Muppets after reading ahead in the script, and offer to take them the rest of the way in their bus. The group is warned by Max that Hopper has hired an assassin, Snake Walker, to kill Kermit, who decides to face his aggressor and proposes a Western-style showdown in a nearby ghost town. There, they find inventor Bunsen Honeydew and his assistant Beaker. Confronting Hopper, Kermit attempts to appeal to Hopper's own hopes and dreams, but Hopper is unmoved and orders his henchmen to kill Kermit and his friends. They are saved when one of Dr. Bunsen's inventions, "insta-grow" pills, temporarily turns Mayhem drummer Animal into a giant, frightening away Hopper and his henchmen for good. The Muppets reach Hollywood, but are soon stopped by studio secretary Miss Tracy, until spreading loose fur causes her to suffer an allergic reaction. They finally meet studio executive Lew Lord, who signs the Muppets to a "standard 'rich and famous' contract", and attempt to make their first movie as a pastiche of their journey. The first take goes awry when Gonzo crashes into the prop rainbow, and an explosion blows a hole in the roof of the studio. As the Muppets stand in stunned silence, a natural rainbow suddenly shines through the hole and right onto the Muppets. Joined by other Muppet characters, the Muppets sing the final verses of "The Magic Store/Rainbow Connection (Reprise)", before Sweetums crashes through the movie screen in the theater, ending the film, finally catching up with the rest of the crew as they congratulate each other on their performances. The character's name is a reference to Sir Lew Grade, head of British company, ATV, which co-produced the original Muppet Show. Production [ edit] Development [ edit] The main obstacle the filmmakers were faced with during the development of The Muppet Movie was whether the Muppets would transition seamlessly from television to film. In 1978, director James Frawley, Jim Henson, and Frank Oz filmed several camera tests outside London to test how the characters would appear in real-world locations. [7] Austin Pendleton recalled that the film was shot on "a very unhappy set, because Jim [Frawley] was very unhappy directing that movie. And I noticed that was the only time the Muppet people used an outside person to direct a Muppet movie. They never did that again. After that, it was either Jim Henson or Frank Oz. And I would have liked to have been in one of those, because those sets were very harmonious. But this was not. " [8] Filming locations included Albuquerque, New Mexico. [9] To perform Kermit static on a log, Henson squeezed into a specially designed metal container complete with an air hose (to breathe), a rubber sleeve which came out of the top to perform Kermit and a monitor to see his performance, and placed himself under the water, log, and the Kermit puppet. [10] He was also assisted in this operation by Kathryn Mullen and Steve Whitmire. This scene took five days to film. Before this, no film had a hand puppet act with its entire body appearing on-screen. That is, hand puppets were only seen from the waist up, and it became a major plot point to show Kermit with legs. To have Kermit ride a bicycle in a full-body shot, a Kermit puppet with legs was posed onto the seat and his legs and arms were attached to the pedals and handlebars. An overhead crane with a marionette system held the bicycle through strong strings invisible to the camera, guiding the bicycle forward. The crane and system were out of the camera's frame of vision. [7] Other shots required Muppets standing and acting in a full-body shot. Specially-made, remote-controlled puppets were placed on the set and controlled by puppeteers out of the frame. A dancing Kermit and Fozzie Bear were operated by Henson and Frank Oz in front of a blue screen, and were composited onto a separate reel of the stage. Both of these effects and the bicycle effect would be used again, and refined, in subsequent Muppet films. The closing reprise of "Rainbow Connection" featured a crowd of more than 250 Muppet characters—virtually every Muppet that had been created up to that point in time. According to Henson Archivist Karen Falk: "137 puppeteers were enlisted from the Puppeteers of America (along with the regular Muppet performers) to perform every Muppet extant. Prior to the day-long filming of the shot, Henson gave the enthusiastic participants a lesson in the art of cinematic puppetry. Amazingly, it did take just one day. " The Muppet Show Fan Club newsletter answered the question of "How did they do it? " The response was "There are 250 puppets in the last shot of the film, and they're all moving. How? 150 puppeteers in a 6' deep, 17' wide pit, that's how. They were recruited through the Los Angeles Guild of The Puppeteers of America and almost every puppeteer west of the Rockies reported for pit duty. " [11] In September 1978, Edgar Bergen, Henson's idol who appeared in a cameo role, died shortly after completing his scenes. Henson dedicated the film to his memory. Style [ edit] The Muppet Movie uses meta-references as a source of humor, as characters occasionally break the fourth wall to address the audience or comment on their real-life circumstances. In one scene, Kermit and Fozzie encounter Big Bird on the road, offering him a lift to Hollywood, but he declines, heading to New York City to break into public television, referencing the character's role in Sesame Street. In a particularly meta-fictional plot twist, Kermit and Fozzie actually give the screenplay to Dr. Teeth, who later uses it to find and rescue them after they have been stranded in the desert. Prop vehicles [ edit] Several classic cars were specially selected by Henson for appearances in the film. The most prominent were a pair of 1951 Studebaker Commander Coupes driven by Fozzie Bear in the film. One car was painted but unmodified and driven by a person in the front seat. It was used for long, traveling shots. The second car was driven by a person in the trunk, who viewed the road through a TV set. The television received its image from a camera located in the center nose of the car's front grille. This made it possible for Frank Oz to perform Fozzie Bear in the front seat, and have the character seemingly drive the car in close-up shots. This car is now on display at the Studebaker National Museum in South Bend, Indiana. Doc Hopper is chauffeured throughout the movie by Max in a 1959 Cadillac Fleetwood 75 Limousine. The final car driven by the Muppets is a 1946 Ford Woodie station wagon, famous for its wood panel siding and a valuable collectible. Music [ edit] The film's music was written by Kenneth Ascher and Paul Williams. Regarding the music's composition, Williams said; "Jim Henson gave you more [creative] freedom than anybody I've ever worked with in my life. I said, 'You want to hear the songs as we're writing them? ' He said, 'No. I'll hear them in the studio. I know I'm gonna love them. ' You just don't get that kind of freedom on a project these days. " [12] "Movin' Right Along", "Never Before, Never Again", and "I Hope That Somethin' Better Comes Along" were shortened in the film, compared to their soundtrack versions, for continuity purposes. The latter, a duet between Rowlf and Kermit, contained references that the studio considered too mature for children, although the song appeared complete in the British theatrical and home video debut versions. In "Finale: The Magic Store", a line performed by Kermit in the film is sung by Fozzie on the soundtrack recording. Release [ edit] In celebration of the film's 40th anniversary, The Muppet Movie returned to theaters for two days on July 25 and 30, 2019. [13] Home media [ edit] The Muppet Movie was the first film from ITC Entertainment to be released on home video when Magnetic Video issued it in May 1980, having acquired the video rights to ITC's films. It was reissued in 1982 and 1984 by CBS/Fox Video. In 1993, Buena Vista Home Video re-released the film under their Jim Henson Video label. [14] The movie was reissued again on VHS by Columbia Tristar Home Video [nb 1] and Jim Henson Home Entertainment on June 1, 1999, who would then release the movie onto DVD on June 5, 2001. It was re-released by Walt Disney Home Entertainment on DVD and reissued as a Walt Disney Pictures release in November 2005, as Kermit's 50th Anniversary Edition. Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released the film as the Nearly 35th Anniversary Edition on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in August 2013. [16] This leaves out the rights to the Sesame Street characters already owned by Sesame Workshop. Reception [ edit] Box office [ edit] The film proved to be a huge hit at the box office during the summer of 1979 and ended up grossing $76, 657, 000 domestically [5] [4], making it the seventh highest-grossing film of 1979, and also the second highest-grossing Muppet film after the release of The Muppets in 2011. The success of the film gave Jim Henson Productions an opportunity to release more Muppet productions theatrically. The film's successful theatrical release encouraged Lew Grade into furthering his own film distribution company, which later backfired with the massive box office failures of Can't Stop the Music (from EMI) and Raise the Titanic (from ITC), both released by Associated Film Distribution just a year later. [17] Critical reception [ edit] Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three-and-a-half out of four stars. In his favorable review, he was fascinated that " The Muppet Movie not only stars the Muppets but, for the first time, shows us their feet. " [18] Vincent Canby of The New York Times offered equal praise, stating that the film "demonstrates once again that there's always room in movies for unbridled amiability when it's governed by intelligence and wit. " [19] Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of four and called it "surely one of the summer's most entertaining films, " which "does a fairly nice job of trying to be all things to all people. Which is not an easy job. " [20] Dale Pollock of Variety wrote, "'The Muppet Movie' is a winner... Script by Jerry Juhl and Jack Burns incorporates the zingy one-liners and bad puns that have become the teleseries' trade mark, but also develops the Muppets themselves as thinking, feeling characters. " [21] Charles Champlin of the Los Angeles Times wrote, "as you might well expect, it is hip, funny, technically ingenious, fast-moving, melodious, richly produced, contemporary and equally and utterly beguiling to grown-ups and small persons. " [22] Katrine Ames of Newsweek stated, "'The Muppet Movie' is a delectable grab bag of influences — stories by L. Frank Baum and Lewis Carroll, Westerns, the Crosby-Hope and Garland - Rooney movies — as well as its own inventive devices. The result is a kind of ' That's Entertainment! ' with a plot attached. Its charm — and success — lie primarily in its loving pokes at Hollywood conventions and in the lovable characters who do the poking. " [23] Leonard Maltin 's annual movie guide found the film enjoyable, though he called the score "pedestrian". The Muppet Movie currently holds an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with an average score of 8/10, based on 48 reviews. The site's consensus says " The Muppet Movie, the big-screen debut of Jim Henson's plush creations, is smart, lighthearted, and fun for all ages. " [24] In 2009, it was named to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress for being "culturally, historically or aesthetically" significant and will be preserved for all time. Discovery of Princess Kaguya (depiction from the Edo period, late 17th century) The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter ( 竹取物語, Taketori Monogatari) is a 10th-century Japanese monogatari (fictional prose narrative) containing Japanese folklore. It is considered the oldest extant Japanese prose narrative [1] [2] although the oldest manuscript dates to 1592. [3] The tale is also known as The Tale of Princess Kaguya ( かぐや姫の物語, Kaguya-hime no Monogatari), after its protagonist. [4] It primarily details the life of a mysterious girl called Kaguya, who was discovered as a baby inside the stalk of a glowing bamboo plant. Narrative [ edit] Taketori no Okina takes Kaguya-hime to his home, Drawn by Tosa Hiromichi, c. 1600 One day, while walking in the bamboo forest, an old, childless bamboo cutter called Taketori no Okina ( 竹取翁, "the Old Man who Harvests Bamboo") came across a mysterious, shining stalk of bamboo. After cutting it open, he found inside it an infant the size of his thumb. He rejoiced to find such a beautiful girl and took her home. He and his wife raised her as their own child and named her Kaguya-hime (かぐや姫 accurately, Nayotake no Kaguya-hime, "Shining princess of the supple bamboo"). Thereafter, Taketori no Okina found that whenever he cut down a stalk of bamboo, inside would be a small nugget of gold. Soon he became rich. Kaguya-hime grew from a small baby into a woman of ordinary size and extraordinary beauty. At first, Taketori no Okina tried to keep her away from outsiders, but over time the news of her beauty spread. Eventually, five princes came to Taketori no Okina's residence to ask for the beautiful Kaguya-hime's hand in marriage. The princes eventually persuaded Taketori no Okina to tell a reluctant Kaguya-hime to choose from among them. Kaguya-hime concocted impossible tasks for the princes, agreeing to marry the one who managed to bring her his specified item. That night, Taketori no Okina told the five princes what each must bring. The first was told to bring her the stone begging bowl of the Buddha Shakyamuni from India, the second a jeweled branch from the mythical island of Hōrai, [5] the third the legendary robe of the fire-rat of China, the fourth a colored jewel from a dragon 's neck, and the final prince a cowry shell born of swallows. Realizing that it was an impossible task, the first prince returned with an expensive stone bowl, hoping that Kaguya-hime would believe it to be real, but after noticing that the bowl did not glow with holy light, Kaguya-hime saw through his deception. Likewise, two other princes attempted to deceive her with fakes, but also failed. The fourth gave up after encountering a storm, while the final prince lost his life (severely injured in some versions) in his attempt. After this, the Emperor of Japan, Mikado, came to see the strangely beautiful Kaguya-hime and, upon falling in love, asked her to marry him. Although he was not subjected to the impossible trials that had thwarted the princes, Kaguya-hime rejected his request for marriage as well, telling him that she was not of his country and thus could not go to the palace with him. She stayed in contact with the Emperor, but continued to rebuff his requests and marriage proposals. That summer, whenever Kaguya-hime saw the full moon, her eyes filled with tears. Though her adoptive parents worried greatly and questioned her, she was unable to tell them what was wrong. Her behaviour became increasingly erratic until she revealed that she was not of this world and must return to her people on the Moon. In some versions of this tale, it is said that she was sent to the Earth, where she would inevitably form material attachment, as a temporary punishment for some crime, while in others, she was sent to Earth for her own safety during a celestial war. The gold that Taketori no Okina had been finding had in fact been a stipend from the people of the Moon, sent down to pay for Kaguya-hime's upkeep. Kaguya-hime goes back to the Moon As the day of her return approached, the Emperor sent many guards around her house to protect her from the Moon people, but when an embassy of "Heavenly Beings" arrived at the door of Taketori no Okina's house, the guards were blinded by a strange light. Kaguya-hime announced that, though she loved her many friends on Earth, she must return with the Moon people to her true home. She wrote sad notes of apology to her parents and to the Emperor, then gave her parents her own robe as a memento. She then took a little of the elixir of life, attached it to her letter to the Emperor, and gave it to a guard officer. As she handed it to him, her feather robe was placed on her shoulders, and all of her sadness and compassion for the people of the Earth were apparently forgotten. The heavenly entourage took Kaguya-hime back to Tsuki no Miyako (月の都; lit. "the Capital of the Moon"), leaving her earthly foster parents in tears. The parents became very sad and were soon put to bed sick. The officer returned to the Emperor with the items Kaguya-hime had given him as her last mortal act, and reported what had happened. The Emperor read her letter and was overcome with sadness. He asked his servants, "Which mountain is the closest place to Heaven? ", to which one replied the Great Mountain of Suruga Province. The Emperor ordered his men to take the letter to the summit of the mountain and burn it, in the hope that his message would reach the distant princess. The men were also commanded to burn the elixir of immortality since the Emperor did not wish to live forever without being able to see her. The legend has it that the word immortality, 不死 ( fushi), became the name of the mountain, Mount Fuji. It is also said that the kanji for the mountain, 富士山 (literally "Mountain Abounding with Warriors"), are derived from the Emperor's army ascending the slopes of the mountain to carry out his order. It is said that the smoke from the burning still rises to this day. (In the past, Mount Fuji was much more volcanically active and therefore produced more smoke. ) Literary connections [ edit] Elements of the tale were drawn from earlier stories. The protagonist Taketori no Okina, given by name, appears in the earlier poetry collection Man'yōshū (c. 759; poem# 3791). In it, he meets a group of women to whom he recites a poem. This indicates that there previously existed an image or tale revolving around a bamboo cutter and celestial or mystical women. [6] [7] A similar retelling of the tale appears in the c. 12th century Konjaku Monogatarishū (volume 31, chapter 33), although their relation is under debate. [8] Banzhu Guniang [ edit] In 1957, Jinyu Fenghuang (金玉鳳凰), a Chinese book of Tibetan tales, was published. [9] In early 1970s, Japanese literary researchers became aware that "Banzhu Guniang" (班竹姑娘), one of the tales in the book, had certain similarities with The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. [10] [11] Initially, many researchers thought that "Banzhu Guniang" must be related to Tale of Bamboo Cutter, although some were skeptical. In 1980s, studies showed that the relationship is not as simple as initially thought. Okutsu provides extensive review of the research, and notes that the book Jinyu Fenghuang was intended to be for children, and as such, the editor took some liberties in adapting the tales. No other compilation of Tibetan tales contains the story. [12] A Tibet-born person wrote that he did not know the story. [13] A researcher went to Sichuan and found that, apart from those who had already read "Jinyu Fenghuang", local researchers in Chengdu did not know the story. [14] Tibetan informants in Ngawa Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture did not know the story either. [14] Legacy [ edit] The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter has been identified as proto- science fiction. Some of its science fiction plot elements include Kaguya-hime being a princess from the Moon who is sent to Earth for safety during a celestial war, an extraterrestrial being raised by a human on Earth, and her being taken back to the Moon by her real extraterrestrial family. A manuscript illustration also depicts a round flying machine that resembles a flying saucer. Many anime hold real life events that fans can attend to meet the staff and/or cast of the series, or to engage with other fans who also love the show. These events take many forms, from simple meet-and-greets, to staged games and interactions among the seiyuu, to full blown concerts. The nature of the event is often at least as important as the show it’s for. Popular musicians and seiyuu create a bigger draw, as expected. This also means that the sales will usually drop for the following volume depending on the nature of the event ticket. Why are some titles bolded? That indicates that it's the title's first volume released. What does X mean in DVD or BD sales? It most likely means that the series didn't meet the weekly threshold (Threshold can be found at the top of the thread). Any sort of question, feedback or correction is welcome. Oshii and adaptations Ghost in the Shell (GitS) stands as one of the most influential anime films of all time, and has been consistently praised for its visual direction, stellar animation, and densely layered philosophical elements and themes. The franchise itself has proven to be critically and commercially successful, having spawned another three films, a remastered version, two TV series, and a Hollywood live-action adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson while also having been cited to be the inspiration of Western filmmakers such as the Wachowski Brothers ( The Matrix) and James Cameron ( Avatar). Much of the praise for the film is largely attributed to Mamoru Oshii—arguably one of the most popular anime directors around and one that has received worldwide recognition not only for GitS, but also for other film projects that were under his supervision. Frequent examples brought up from his 36-year career are Mobile Police Patlabor 2: The Movie, a political drama commenting on the state of Japan, Urusei Yatsura Movie 2: Beautiful Dreamer, a much more dramatic take on Rumiko Takahashi’s original work, and, back to GitS, its stand-alone sequel film Innocence, which has the achievement of being the first and only Japanese-animated film to be nominated for the Palme d’Or, the international Cannes Film Festival’s most prestigious award. Aside from anime, Oshii also does not shy away from other forms of media and has also made his presence known in manga, live-action, and even video games. His involvement in other franchises is so prominent that people tend to forget that Oshii, for the most part, is not the original creator of said franchises. Take The Sky Crawlers, for instance: a film strongly attached to his name, overshadowing the fact that it was an adaptation of the novel series of the same name by Hiroshi Mori. Urusei Yatsura too; though Takahashi is considerably popular in her own right. However, the most interesting attribution to Oshii is him directing GitS, to the point that people know more of Oshii’s involvement than its original creator and artist, Masamune Shirow (also of Appleseed fame). Of course, this scenario is nowhere near special. Within anime alone, there are also other directors that have been acclaimed for their direction on works adapting source material: the late Isao Takahata’s most celebrated works are adaptations projected through his creative guidance, namely Anne of Green Gables, [ Only Yesterday](, The Tale of Princess Kaguya, and Grave of the Fireflies, among many others; Naoko Yamada’s distinctive style brought K-On! from its 4-koma format to something more meaningful; and the legendary Osamu Dezaki’s takes on Ashita no Joe and Rose of Versailles are such examples of culturally iconic adaptations. With this, there should be something that these directors apply in their work that have gained them their recognizable status. This essay serves as an overview of Oshii’s unique approach that enables him to leave his personal imprint throughout his entire filmography, taking three of his films ( Patlabor 2, Beautiful Dreamer, GitS) and breaking down his methods of visual and thematic direction. What makes Oshii’s adaptations Oshii? The director’s “tools” When encountering the work of a director, you would usually notice elements that seem to match, appearing as distinct commonalities between his or her other works. Naoko Yamada’s fixation on legs to depict the emotions and personality of the character, Makoto Shinkai’s interchangeable use of trains and love at long distances, and Hayao Miyazaki’s penchant of planes and aerial shots, show how much these directors rely on “tools” to project their vision onto animation, continuously honing them throughout their career. Like these people, Oshii also employs tools in approaching his work and he continues to imbue these in his adaptations, firmly embedding his identity within it. …this is a case for a lot of…auteur directors…who kind of have a very consistent theme, or set of themes, or visual style that kind of go throughout a lot of their films…that could certainly be leveled at Oshii. — Brian Ruh, Pause and Select interview (2016) Animals If you’re watching an Oshii film, chances are there’s going to be a dog—or a basset hound, to be more specific. Undoubtedly, the additions of dogs in his work have been the most recognized motif by the director, thanks in part to his self-professed love for them. Oshii uses the basset hound as a representation of himself within the work. However, while Oshii’s strong affinity and reflection about dogs have been extensively documented, he also uses other animals in his visual presentations, especially of birds and fish. Brian Ruh, author of Stray Dog of Anime: The Films of Mamoru Oshii considers the use of these creatures as symbols for the “sense of freedom from the mundane”, or “an escape from containment” (pp. 8, 97). Urbanscapes The settings for Mamoru Oshii’s films usually take place within large cities, often highly urbanized and filled with towering structures, glass-laden exteriors, and at times, deserted or ruined. His use for the setting varies in purpose (spoilers, click at your own risk), but clearly displays his interest in seeing how this kind of backdrop would turn out through several speculative scenarios. Affiliated with the urbanization of cities is technology and authority, which are themes that Oshii has also explored throughout his later film career. Patlabor 2 and GitS are defining examples where the use of technology and conflicts with authority and surveillance are heavily integrated into the plot. Religion and Mythology I'm not a Christian, but I've been reading the Bible since my student days. I use it as a prototype for my stories; not for religious reasons, but for ideology and literary inspiration. — Mamoru Oshii, Carl Gustav Horn interview for Animerica (1996) Religious elements are not uncommon in anime, often serving as stylistic motifs (with Neon Genesis Evangelion infamously having Christian imagery because they “look cool”) or used in allusion with a show’s plot, similar to how Miyazaki’s Nausicaa allegorizes Christianity and Buddhism. Anime and religion are nearly inseparable, and Oshii is no exception from this idea, as his works encompass the blend of religion, mythology and philosophy, and he has infused them in his oeuvre more than anyone else—and arguably more meaningful than anyone else. Originally wanting to be a seminarian, a private and pivotal moment in Oshii’s life has led him to renounce religion, and his dissatisfaction with it came out in the form of Angel’s Egg, a cryptic and experimental film with almost no dialogue to speak of. It alludes to Christian mythos and imagery, and the atmospheric presentation of these elements make up the entirety of its 71-minute run. Since then, religion has been integral to his works, through visuals and character discourse. Perspective Personally, out of Oshii’s alterations, my favorite has to be the way he places all the elements of the source material, twisting it by depicting the story with another character. It adds a tinge of uniqueness to his style and shows that there are diverse and infinite ways you can tell the same setting, the same plot, the same everything, but tell a different story altogether through someone else’s perspective. Interestingly, Oshii takes a liking to having supporting characters take up the helm of main character, and while he doesn’t do this quite often, supporting characters are certainly more prominent in his direction compared to the original work. The utility of these characters allow him to also highlight the scale of change he applies to the world he’s exploring, which acts as the platform for his personal and self-reflective messages. Character Designs Quite possibly, the most evident change in Oshii adaptations would be how he scraps the “anime-style” character designs in favor of more realistic and anatomically correct designs. This is part of Oshii’s intention to make the animation as cinematic as possible, complemented by his sense of photorealism in pretty much everything— backgrounds, lighting, cinematography, and the subtle yet noticeable details in facial expressions. The mass of Japanese animation is still relying on codified symbols and flat images that are a direct inheritance from the ukiyo-e graphic style. — Mamoru Oshii, Jasper Sharp interview for Manga Entertainment UK (2014) In the above quote, Oshii comments on anime’s use of “codified” images from the ukiyo-e genre, or the traditional woodblock printing in Japan. Oshii, growing up experiencing and being influenced by European cinema, might have found himself more comfortable with a visual style more reminiscent of it. With every succeeding film, Oshii’s style evolved as he got more and more accustomed and free from restraint in his creative direction. Employing this visual and narrative style through his tools allowed him to maintain a consistent, recurring set of themes while opening him up to other intriguing subject matters explored through the diverse worlds of his adaptations. Evolution through filmography Oshii’s early work in the anime industry differs from what he is known for, originally doing storyboard work and minor directing stints at Tatsunoko Production in the 1970s to Studio Pierrot in the 1980s. At Pierrot, Oshii would land his first directorial role in the form of Urusei Yatsura, an adaptation of the breakthrough hit romantic comedy manga series by Rumiko Takahashi ( Ranma ½, InuYasha). Expressing dissatisfaction over the production of Urusei Yatsura, Oshii left Pierrot to pursue a freelance directorial career. Before his departure, he had directed over 106 episodes of Urusei plus two feature films, of which one marked his defiance against the fans of the show and possibly against Takahashi herself. It was a move that signified Oshii’s beginning as a director of exceptional artistic vision, and one that allowed him to lead this brand of movement with his subsequent works, including adaptations. Urusei Yatsura revolves around the episodic misadventures of the young and lecherous Ataru Moroboshi, who finds himself pestered by the alien Lum after accidentally proposing to her. Also included is a large supporting cast that consists of rivals, classmates, Lum’s alien friends, and Ataru’s romantic interests which frequently get involved in comedic and ridiculous situations. Much of the bulk of Urusei Yatsura ’s humor and aesthetic are modernizations or references to several elements of Japanese mythology. Even with Japanese cultural jabs and the linguistically contextual puns in the series, the show’s premise and slapstick elements made it a worldwide hit during its five-year run. Oshii took advantage of this aesthetic and integrated it into his own originally-written script. While Beautiful Dreamer is far from your average Urusei episode, Oshii had made sure to make the film as faithful as it can be to the original series, all the while testing his tools for the first significant time. The film begins with a cold opening, depicting the series’ setting of Tomobiki as a desolate and deluged landscape, with their high school being submerged by water. Despite this, some of the characters are still having fun: the main heroine Lum can be seen jet-skiing with other characters, while some others are indulging in the summer heat, complete with radio and television sets, food, and ventilation. Switching to a time where Tomobiki is still intact, Tomobiki High students are ardently preparing as it is the night before the school’s cultural festival. Everyone is doing their own thing, rushing and oblivious of the Groundhog Day -esque time loop that had already befallen them. Oshii specifically used this narrative technique to give the sense of time passing: The action doesn’t start after the movie begins, but rather, the action occurred long before, and as they go along, the characters start to realize it. That’s the kind of chronology, or composition, that I wanted for this film. Otherwise, the audience doesn’t feel time progressing, which I think is a critical part of the film. — Mamoru Oshii, Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer director's commentary, Central Park Media release (2004) In contrast to its preceding film's, Only You 's (also directed by Oshii) ensemble and intergalactic cast, Oshii limits the scope of character cameos to settle on a focal point, the main school cast, in order to widen its character exploration. The series’ resident nurse and priestess Sakura and Ataru’s rival in romance Mendou try to uncover the mystery surrounding the time loop for a significant portion of the film, straying away from Ataru’s routine lusting to create his own harem. Meanwhile, the other characters around them begin to address the fear of getting lost in this neverending day. Oshii manipulates this world according to the rules of the series’ own world-building and effectively manages to present a story that is just as universal as the appeal of Urusei Yatsura itself, albeit in a different way. This scale of change did not only apply to Oshii’s internalistic focus on its cast, but also remade it from the outside. In the opening scene and midway through the film, Tomobiki turns into a post-apocalyptic and ruined urban world, complete with barren land, scattered puddles.. a tank. The reflections that are visible from the waters symbolize the ponderous nature of the film, not only for its cast but also for its viewers. Minor and subtle changes are also made to their original character designs, from more detailed facial and body features to a dynamic wardrobe, something Oshii made sure to indicate a more serious and continuous kind of storytelling. The imagery of fish, water, and aquarium tanks are elements in a film that mirrored Oshii’s intrigue at the time. In one of the scenes, one fish swims across the puddles that reflect the cast as they are walking by. This is a visual hint representing that there is something amiss in their world, one that involves a distorted yet reflective imitation of the “real” world. In a later sequence, the main villain reveals the backstory of his motives and the events that have led up to the point in the film, utilizing the imagery of fish swimming in aquariums to get his point through. Oshii further connotes the ambiguous line between reality and fantasy by likening memories and dreams with each other through using the same symbols. A man who dreamed he was a butterfly woke up and couldn’t tell which was real and which was the dream. Maybe the real “him” is in the butterfly’s dream. Being an Urusei Yatsura film, Japanese mythology and religion are bound to the series, as mentioned earlier. Oshii takes this opportunity to integrate the myth of Urashima Tarou, a well-known ancient folk tale that is the Japanese counterpart to Rip Van Winkle. As the cast discovers the true nature of the world they are in, the connections to the tale are made more apparent. In the tale, the fisherman Urashima Tarou helps out a turtle and releases it into the ocean. Because of his good deed, the turtle offered him to ride under his back to arrive at the underwater Dragon Palace. The illusion of time passed by while Urashima Tarou was on the turtle’s back becomes a central narrative focus in the film as the cast finds themselves in the same predicament. Beautiful Dreamer also makes a parallel to the moral of Urashima Tarou: helping someone does not necessarily lead to good fortune, Beautiful Dreamer spoiler In relation with the film’s themes, it also references The Butterfly Dream, an anecdote by Chinese philosopher Zhuangzi, which can be considered as the thematic center of the plot. If we ultimately think of dreams the same way as we do reality, what would be the purpose of living in the real world? Is there even a solid distinction between what is real and what is a dream? The dreams that I make are the same as reality. Therefore, they ARE reality! This ambiguity between two dynamic elements are themes Oshii would continue to explore even further appearing in the form of the duality of a just war and an unjust peace in Mobile Police Patlabor 2: The Movie and the duality of a cybernetic human and a sentient A. I. in Ghost in the Shell. During the late 1980s, global warming has escalated to the point where the polar ice caps melted, leading to increasing sea levels. To prevent the sea from taking over the land, barriers were constructed all around the world. In the assembly of these barriers, Labors or large-scale industrial machines were created to aid in its completion. Because of the capabilities of Labors, they also began to get involved as part of terrorist tactics and environmentalist extremists against Tokyo's formation of the Babylon Project, a structure meant to reclaim the land and eventually fill all of Tokyo Bay. Patrol Labors or Patlabors were included in the police force as a means of stopping crime and maintaining peace. Mobile Police Patlabor focuses on the quirky and eccentric team within the unit. The Mobile Police Patlabor franchise is another notable example of Oshii being given more credit in comparison to other people involved in its creation. While he certainly brought the mecha franchise to attention because of his part in directing the first OVA Early Days and its films Patlabor 1 and Patlabor 2, the original concept, art, and story were mostly conceived by Masami Yuuki, a manga artist also known for creating Tetsuwan Birdy. In fact, Oshii was the last member to be included in the writer/artist collective Headgear, consisting of Oshii’s frequent collaborators character designer Akemi Takada ( Patlabor, Kimagure Orange Road) and scriptwriter Kazunori Ito ( Maison Ikkoku, GitS), as well as mechanical designer and director Yutaka Izubuchi ( RahXephon, Yamato 2199) and Masami Yuuki. Back in the day, Oshii’s line of work prior to Patlabor had been related to fantastical and surrealistic settings, also in line with his exploration of reality and dreams. With Patlabor, Oshii was given the chance to make use of a heavily contrasted setting while retaining the tools he had developed over his years as a consumer and creator of the medium. Even though this was one of Oshii’s first times dealing with science-fiction leaning more to reality, he had been shown to be interested in showcasing technological and militaristic worlds in the past: Angel’s Egg and Beautiful Dreamer both displayed intricately-detailed tanks in at least one of their scenes, and he had also co-directed the very first OVA Dallos, a sci-fi space opera along with his mentor Hisayuki Toriumi ( Gatchaman). Patlabor 2 highlights another turning point in Oshii’s career as he rid Patlabor of its comedic, bubbly, and self-parodying nature in order to deliver a serious and realistic work, blended with the adherence to the urban setting of Tokyo, allusions to Biblical passages, a different perspective within Patlabor ’s universe, and his personal political statement. Taking the helm of lead characters are Kiichi Gotou and Shinobu Nagumo, originally supporting characters that conveyed the more political nature of the franchise. Being the captains of Special Vehicles 2, Section 2 (the Patlabor division of the Japanese police force), they become entangled in a plot involving Nagumo’s past, the Japanese Self-Defense Force (JSDF), and a conspiracy which can threaten the peace and security of the entire country. This shift in perspective helps Oshii make a contrast between the franchise and his subject matter, while still making the film as Patlabor as it can get. Along with the stronger focus on Nagumo and Gotou are the changes in the cast’s character designs to align with Oshii’s vision of photorealism. The once-exaggerated facial features of the characters are minimalized to be more in line with this aesthetic, which also helps accentuate the mature themes explored throughout the film. Oshii’s use of animals as symbols come as a prominent aspect of the film. Firstly, Patlabor 2 is the first film to feature his trademark basset hound, in a small but significant scene. On a tiny fishing boat, the dog watches the departure of the defense force's helicopters about to stage an attack, emphasizing Oshii’s belief that dogs and other animals are more capable of noticing the truth, whereas our perceptions of it get muddled with the manipulation of the media and institutional forces. Other sequences in the film have blatantly shown flocks of birds hovering in the sky, either shown through television screens, above the masses oblivious of the underlying conflict, or flying over with aircrafts and helicopters. As far as Oshii is concerned, the birds are mere stylistic choices, but their appearances throughout important portions in the film may imply similar connections to how the dog is presented— free and unconstrained by the distortions of reality, overseeing the unfolding of events. Lastly, mirroring Beautiful Dreamer ’s integration of the motif, fish and aquariums play a role in recalling a past event that is key to the plot’s backstory. As the conversation between Gotou and Arakawa, another character, deepens, a picture summarizing Nagumo’s backstory takes on the framing of an aquarium tank, subtly lit with bluish tints and ripples overlapping its display. Later in the film, a shot displays Nagumo herself dealing with a phone call related to her past, suddenly cutting to a close-up of her house's own aquarium tank. Remember Oshii’s quote on Christianity? Patlabor as a franchise already contained several Biblical references, especially made prominent in Oshii’s Patlabor 1, with the involvement of Section 2, most particularly the main character Noa 1 Izumi, with the “Ark” tower of the Babylon the film’s main antagonist is Eiichi Hoba 2. Oshii once again utilizes Biblical elements by integrating it within the story, as a key hint to understanding the main antagonist’s motivations. 1 Take note that the American localized subtitles Romanize her name as “Noah”. 2 When shortened, his name becomes E. Hoba, an play on Jehovah, one of the names of God in the Bible. Suppose ye that I am come to give peace on earth? I tell you, Nay; but rather division: For from henceforth there shall be five in one house divided, three against two, and two against three. The father shall be divided against the son, and the son against the father; the mother against the daughter, and the daughter against the mother; the mother in law against her daughter in law, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. —Luke 12:51-53 Within the passage’s Biblical context lies parallels to the antagonist’s intentions. Similar to how following Jesus can create divisions regarding religious belief, possibly even within families, Oshii anticipates that a stronger and more active Japan would mean that conflict can and will arise from within and against the nation. Oshii himself remarks how Patlabor changed his career: Patlabor for me was a major film in many ways, and I think it became my turning point. I know I am what I am today because of Patlabor. —Mamoru Oshii, WXIII Patlabor the Movie 3 supplemental disc, cited in Brian Ruh's Stray Dog of Anime: The Films of Mamoru Oshii 2nd ed. (2013), p. 77 The style Oshii has been known for particularly in the West came into actuality thanks to the franchise, and it opened up a chance for Oshii to work on a film that culminated in his breakthrough as a globally popular director. You can draw big parallels between the opening sequences of Patlabor 2 and Ghost in the Shell. In both sequences, Kenji Kawai’s ( Mob Psycho 100, Fate/stay night, Ranma ½) atmospheric music plays as the characters interact with high-end technology. Detail for interfaces, mechanical parts, and testing procedures are presented with clear-cut and precise animation. However, whereas the Patlabor franchise focuses on how scientific breakthroughs affect the external world, GitS explores how technology affects the very core of our individualities—the mind. It should be noted that GitS does not focus on a supporting character: the protagonist of the film is, like its source material, Motoko Kusanagi, a cybernetic human with the title of Major working for the intelligence department Section 9. Despite this, Oshii presents a shift in perspective by emphasizing the existential conflict that brings out her pondering and serious nature. Within the world of the film, technology has advanced to the point where the human consciousness can be digitally transmitted to other cybernetic bodies. Having been in several bodies (“shells”) in the past, this leads Motoko to contemplate on the humanity of her “ghost”. The other visual elements of GitS aid in expositing Motoko’s question of identity. Character designer Hiroyuki Okiura ( Jin-Roh, A Letter to Momo) gives Motoko an older and muscular body in contrast to her heavily fetishized young and feminine look in the manga: Motoko Kusanagi is a cyborg. Therefore her body is strong and youthful. However her human mentality is considerably older than she looks. I tried to depict this maturity in her character instead of the original girl created by Masamune Shirow. — Hiroyuki Okiura, Ghost in the Shell Production Report, Region 4 release (1996) Aside from critical changes in character design, Oshii depicts the manga’s futuristic and urbanized Newport City as a bustling, dirty and rundown locale modeled after Hong Kong. This change acts more than an aesthetic to Motoko’s dilemma, as it also parallels the thematic outline of the film— Hong Kong is a country that also experiences a loss of national identity, being a British colony in the past, and currently a region of China, yet has its own autonomous system of government. The film’s infamous city sequence not only presents a breather from the action sequences prior, but also brings you into Motoko’s state of reflection. Shots of the confusing urban sprawl display unfinished buildings filled with scaffoldings and a stoplight stuck at flashing yellow, allegorizing the incompleteness Motoko feels with regards to her humanity. While animals do not appear as often in GitS, Oshii included his beloved basset hound within three scenes. Firstly, as a criminal is being pursued by Batou, he runs by several posters of basset hounds. In a later scene, a TV ad of a woman and a basset hound plays, while one of the hackers brought for interrogation is shown a picture of himself, with a basset hound looking at him from the background. Finally, in the city sequence, a shot shows a basset hound staring at the camera (presumably Motoko’s perspective) from a bridge. How Oshii incorporates the basset hound in scenes can possibly take a more, personal and intimate meaning, as Oshii himself considers the dog as his self-insert, yet he also remarks how he makes use of them in relation to his film’s subject matter: O: Do you think these symbols take on more meaning as they're repeated from film to film? Isn't there a risk that repetition will dull their effect? MO: Eventually, I think, by using these elements repeatedly, I add meaning to my final product. I'm still exploring how to express my feelings through these elements. I've always felt that in order to portray humans, you should not be shooting humans; you should be shooting something else. And what I've used is animals, which are very important in my films. ” — Mamoru Oshii, interviewed by Tasha Robinson for The A. V. Club (2004) This idea from Oshii can also be realized from the beginning of the film, although in a different form of imagery through Motoko’s recollection of the creation of her mechanical body in a dream. Shots of a cybernetic head and torso being assembled establish the opening sequence of the film. While covered in metal casing, there is a human brain placed and connected to the body, as displayed in a green hologram scanning its activity. This body undergoes several phases of development before finally resembling like a human. After waking up from this dream, Motoko herself wonders if she is still one. This masterful sequence immediately portrays Motoko’s character and internal conflict, by showing what’s not human about her. The scope of religious and mythological allusions within GitS is considerably large, especially as it questions what it means to be human and if we can go further than that. The track used for the opening sequence, aptly named “Making of Cyborg”, contains lyrics sung in the ancient Yamato language, depicting the descent of a goddess: A ga maeba, kuwashime yoini keri (Because I had danced, the beautiful lady was enchanted. ) A ga maeba, teru tsuki toyomu nari (Because I had danced, the shining moon echoed. ) Yobai ni kami amakudarite, (Proposing marriage, the god shall descend) Yoha ake, nuedori naku, Tookamiemitame (The night clears away and the chimera bird will sing. ) In addition, the climax of the film contains a monumental scene wherein the antagonist shoots down a mural of the Tree of Life, a concept both used in scientific and mythological contexts, stopping right at the hominis (human) label as to challenge the established line of evolution, and to usher in a new type of being from the synthesis of the A. and the human mind. As a final touch and being faithful to his source of literary inspiration, Oshii infuses Biblical references that describe Motoko’s quest for self-identity. In the boat scene, the following verse from 1 Corinthians 13 was uttered: For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known. —1 Corinthians 13:12 And in the film’s conclusion, Motoko utters another part from the passage: When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up my childish ways. —1 Corinthians 13:11 The way the verses are used are flipped in order, possibly to foreshadow Motoko’s character arc. GitS spoiler A post from r/GhostintheShell goes deeper in exploring the meaning behind the use of this passage. Conclusion: Auteurism and faithfulness Mamoru Oshii may be likened to an auteur: a creator whose works are strongly imbued and influenced by the elements of his artistic vision. During his career, he has shaped that artistic vision through constant use of his tools that enabled him to tackle on different subject matters while leaving his mark as its director. In reality, Oshii’s adaptations have received mixed receptions for not being faithful enough, especially with his direction on the second Urusei Yatsura film. Patlabor 2 and GitS did not have any comedic elements in favor of addressing thought-provoking themes. However, I would argue on the definition of “being faithful”. Beautiful Dreamer maintains a visual continuity with Only You in the form of the broken clock on the clock tower, while the characters still act like their normal selves, retaining their comedic and wacky personalities. Patlabor 2 ’s story can find itself at home in the original series as one of the more serious episodes (in fact, Patlabor 2 is based off of Episodes 5 and 6 of the Early Days OVA). GitS encompasses several elements of Shirow’s heavily expository world, effectively embedding them as parts of the world that complement important details about Motoko’s character development. Oshii may have taken liberties in order to give way for his tools and vision for his films, but he has always tried to maintain his adaptations in spirit and with continuity to the original. It may not be the same thing fans may be looking for, but every detail he puts in his work gives acknowledgement to the original creator’s work, world, and characters. Undeniably, Oshii is a remarkable director who puts in effort for carefully-detailed worlds, along with cinematic presentations of themes that reach out not just to its characters, but also to its viewers—just like how any well-written piece should be. With the culmination of his career through GitS, Oshii’s mastery of his tools shine through the heavy layers of its plot, setting, characters and themes. That’s what makes Oshii’s adaptations Oshii. Impressive voice, nice. Que alguien me explique como con una canción tan alegre como es cuando llega la gente de la luna, me dan tantas ganas de llorar! Maldita gente de la luna xD. Sagan om prinsessan Kaguya Free watch online Is this the same folktale from the Ghibili film Princess Kaguya. Isao Takahata's The Tale of Princess Kaguya is a beautifully crafted epic. The animation, atypical of the style of Ghibli-style blockbuster we've come to expect and love in the UK, is delicate and beautiful. It is of no surprise that this melancholic triumph received an Oscar nomination for best animated film this year. Based on 10th Century Japanese folklore, it follows the life of a humble bamboo cutter who stumbles upon a glowing stalk, a tiny, hand-sized girl growing within. Returning home to his wife with excitement, the child rapidly transforms from baby, to toddler, to infant in a beautifully animated transition. Though the genuine film can be seen with subtitles, the dubbed version stars a formidable cast of Chloë Grace Moretz, Darren Criss, James Caan and Lucy Lui that compliments the animation impeccably. It's then down to personal preference as to which you'd rather experience. The tale beautifully and poignantly manifests itself as a parable-like journey, staying relatively true to its historical and mystical routes. The story follows the family as the bamboo cutter moves them to the city in order to fulfil Kaguya's destiny of becoming a princess. Though it is never clear as to how or why the father made the connection between his adoptive child and her future of royalty, the film rifles on and allows the little plot indiscretions to go largely unquestioned. The balance between humour and solemnity helps the narrative flow whilst making you feel real empathy for Kaguya and her situation. Whimsical moments deliver in captivating you entirely. The film also injects sorrow, particularly as the princess struggles with her new life away from the farm, friends and freedom she grew up with. And While her life moves on, the film develops upon these points before flowing lovingly into a situation in which the Princess sends five potential love interests on a mission to find for her an unobtainable gift. The new development, in which Kaguya finally embraces her power, is charming and brilliant! Animated entirely from the modern innovation of ink and watercolour, the definition in the penmanship drives the tone of the film. In moments of calm the pen marks curve delicately, whilst in times of trouble ink is sharp, aggressive and unfinished. The effect adds peace and rigour respectively, another layer to enhance the story. The Tale of Princess Kaguya is a welcome departure from this over-saturated CGI market that, whilst great in its own mediums, has detracted from the flare of ink based animation. Here Isao Takahata reminds us that it is still a daring art form that can craft glorious movies such as this. The entire film is held together exquisitely by another Joe Hisaishi masterclass. The stirring soundtrack adding beauty, elegance and hope to an already sublime film. The concluding piece of music is harrowing, yet delightful in the ultimate juxtaposition of image and sound. The score alone will have you scurrying home and downloading it just to hear it again. The Tale of Princess Kaguya is surprising and captivating, a true victory of imagination. With folklore at it's heart it airs on ridiculous, but remains grounded enough to thrill. The story is simple enough, but ends with a profound message. Originally written for: I'm With Geek. I really love the movie, but i didn't get why Cloe Grace Moretz is in the cast, i mean, the original language of this movie is Japanese, so, i don't get it, does she know Japanese or she translate the movie for a English version, the she shouldn't be in the cast, nothing against her, but the cast should be the original, no the translate, in the other way if she does know Japanese, then its amazing, and should be a great fact which should be in the general description of the page where everybody can see it, if someone know this please let me know, it will be great if she have actually really does the original voice of the princes. This movie is the first movie to ever forcely bring a tear into my eyes. It just shows how woman and men don't love each other like they used to,nowadays all we do is look at each other's bodies and faces, basically today people only want sex. They only care how big your dick is or how big your boobs are. Damn,i'm never gonna find the woman of my life... She is the one she is the one called sailor moon.

The artist travels to the woman's seaside place of residence and the movie covers the period of the painting of the canvas and the initially touchy, but ultimately loving, relationship that develops between these two young women.
The setting is intimate, the cast is small, and the plot is almost wafer-thin. The pace is almost painfully sedate, but one gradually becomes accustomed to it, and to appreciate the opportunity to soak in the imagery, and the detail (Rather like looking at a painting, I guess)
The cast is almost exclusively female, as is the director, and this is clearly a deliberate and dedicated woman's movie, in every sense. However, any man who actually likes women will have no problem being entertained and ultimately rewarded by giving this film a watch.
Naturally any kind of open love between two women of social status was never going to be a potential option in the 18th century, so how are these two going to reconcile the passion that emerges between them. This is the only plot device and jeopardy element. Not much to work with, but I felt that this was a statement by the producers to show that in the woman's realm deep feelings go a longer way than plot twists and high dudgeon.
The acting is controlled and meaningful, the interior settings are explored to the point that you almost fill in the smells yourself, and the sequences at the beach linger long enough that you begin bracing yourself against the coastal winds. The high-point of the film is when the community of women gather on a cliff to associate, drink a bit, and sing a particularly haunting mantra-like song.
My all time favourite film (La Belle Noiseuse - Long version) also attempts to capture an artist busy in the process of painting a picture. It is not an easy thing to do on film. Naturally I believe my favourite movie does, but does this film achieve that too? Well, to a point, although, for me, the creation of the picture here is more a metaphor for the falling in love, than about the artistic pursuit as of itself.
Did I enjoy watching this film? Yes, I did, but a week later I am struggling to recall more that a few vivid moments or to reconnect with it on an emotional level.
A worthy film certainly, an important woman's work for sure, but one to be more admired than ever relished.

Against All Enemies Watch stream.nbcolympics. When you consider that this movie was created for just 8000 budget, and the only extra crew was the two director brothers' mom, you can only see this film as a masterpiece of what's possible. Creating a film of that quality is almost impossible for that budget, I guarantee you that (Primer was shot for 7500, but that was back in 2003, we had major inflation since then. comes to 10.5k. Besides, at the end, it's all relative. You'd have to ask yourself: is this movie 1000 times worse than an 8 million movie? The answer is of course, no. In fact, it's very possible that this movie is better than MOST 8 million budget movies! You should watch this movie even out of curiosity of what's possible on such a budget! It's a true study for all narrative filmmakers and film geeks.

She simply doesn't measure up to the character she is trying to play. She probably did well in the Twilight movies because she really has "dead eyes. Seberg was vibrant and alive in all of her roles, a talent Kristen has yet to develop.

This movie was good but nothing out of the ordinary. Although Kristen Stewart's performance was good she had the room to really make the role her own.
I don't think you have to see this in a big screen just wait for it on streaming platforms.

La hora del miedo critica. 21:00 In French, Hippocampe translates to seahorse. Asking a girl out for the first time on Valentine's Day can sometimes be a gamble. Should I ask her to go out some time before Valentine's Day first? Is asking someone out for a first date on Valentine's Day too presumptuous? Should Valentine's Day be reserved for couples who have already reached a certain point in their relationship? And if V Day is reserved for pre-existing relationships, would she reject my Valentine's Day invitation despite her willingness to say yes on any other day? Also, will that permanently seal me under the category of... friend? I wrestled with this idea for 24 full hours before finally deciding to say, "Screw it. What have I got to lose, other than my dignity? " And so, with my newfound bravery, I decided to text her (very brave of me, right? ). It went something like this: Me: What r u doin? She: nuthin She: u? Me: Trying to make a decision She: a decision about what? Me: Where we should go this Friday She::D R U asking me out for Valentine's Day? Me: Maybe... She: Where would you take me? Me: It's a suprise. Are you saying yes? She: Maybe... ;) Little did she know, it wasn't just going to be a surprise for her. In reality, I had no idea where I was going to take her. But, that little chocolate-covered lie bought me a bit of time to find a place to go. I started googling Valentine's Day events in town. I came up with the usual restaurants inviting couples for their special V-Day dinners, dance club parties, etc. Then I saw something that stuck out - An event for a Valentine's Day Festival on a "meet up group" website. "That's different, " I thought. I've never heard of a festival for V-Day. It says they'll have food, drink, dancing, and entertainment of many types. I decided that this was the winner, and signed us up with their RSVP form. That Friday came quickly. I picked her up around 7, and we drove out to the event, which was a bit outside of town. It was about a 45 minute drive, past a lot of fields and barren areas. When we finally reached the destination on Google maps, I saw a sign hung at the corner of a small turn-off that read "Valentine's Festival", with an arrow pointing down the dirt drive. We pulled in, and after a few seconds of nothing but trees and brush, we saw some other vehicles parked in an improvised parking lot fashion on the lawn. This brought a sigh of relief, as I really didn't want to look like a complete idiot in front of her on our first date, especially with it being Valentine's Day. We parked, got out, I took her arm in arm as we walked toward what looked like a large outdoor party going on with lots of lanterns and merry-sounding noise. This was definitely the place. I looked at her and noticed a smile. "This looks like fun! " she said. I smiled when I saw that she was happy with my decision. We eventually came to a front gate where a woman, dressed in period clothing, asked to see our RSVPs. I showed her on my phone, and she checked off our names on a sheet. We continued inward. To put it lightly, this place was beautiful. There were colored lantern lights everywhere, soft white string lights defining sections and walkways, an incredible food spread (which was as of yet untouched), people dancing, singing, and even some old men dressed in religious wear who seemed to be just as into it as everyone else. Most of them were dressed in the same period clothing as the woman who checked our RSVPs at the gate. And it was all set up in a field with beautiful flowers and greenery all around us. It looked perfect. I was proud of myself for making this decision. She would definitely be impressed. A minute later, we were approached by an older woman who looked happy to see us. "Hello, you must be our guests! " she said with a smile. "We are definitely two of them! " I said. She laughed. "Come with me, we'll get you all set up for the festival. It starts shortly. " "Ok, " I said, looking at my date. We smiled at each other and started following the woman. She led us to an area with some small wooden booths. I wasn't sure if these were outhouses, phone booths, or what. She said, "You take the one on the left, she can take the one on the right. Inside, you will find clothing to change into. " "We have to change clothing? " I asked. "Yes, for the aesthetic of the festival. You're both going to look so cute! " I looked at my date, gave her a half smirk with a shoulder shrug, and she did the same back. We entered our booths. I felt kind of silly wearing this costume clothing, but I was going to play along if everybody else was. I exited the booth. She was still in hers. A couple of minutes later, she opened the door and stepped out slowly, wearing a stunning dress of many colors. She looked like a princess. I think she could tell by my widened eyes that I liked it. "See something you like? " she asked. I chuckled. "Absolutely. " The woman looked at us both, with a satisfied smile. "You both look splendid. We'll keep your clothing in bags for you. Come along! " We followed her. She led us to an area with several tables of food and drink, and told us to make ourselves at home. We grabbed some small plates of hors d'ouevres, along with some wine. We talked and ate. "How did you find this place? " she asked. "I found it online. Do you like it? " "Of course I do. It's wonderful. " After finishing our food, we refilled our wine and headed out toward an area where there were people laughing and dancing to music played by a small group of musicians with stringed instruments. I asked her to dance, and we danced, and laughed, and even kissed. A little while later, everybody started moving to another location, so we followed. We came to an area with a large platform, like a stage, with two chairs in the middle. The stage was decorated with flowers of red, yellow and orange. Shortly after, a few of those old men in religious garb walked up the steps on the side of the stage, bringing a couple of guests with them, and directing them to sit in the chairs. I couldn't wait to see what they were about to do. After the guests in the chairs (a male and a female) were seated, the woman who had given us our festival clothing approached the stage, then turned to address the crowd. "As we are here to honor the great Romulus and Remus, creators of Rome, the festival has now begun. " Everyone began cheering. "Who? " I whispered to my date. "Shhh" she said. "Bring her in! ", said the woman. A large carriage was being pulled by several men toward the stage. When they got closer and people were out of the way, I noticed that there was some sort of animal inside. A very large animal. When the carriage reached the front of the stage, it became clear to me that this was some sort of wolf-like creature. I was getting pretty uneasy by this point. The woman turned toward the guests on stage. "For this part, you will be the goat" she said, pointing at the man. He laughed. She then turned to the female and said "And you... will be the dog. " She looked confused and insulted by this statement. The male said, "What?! " The woman assured him, "Don't worry, it's part of the celebration! " And he seemed to calm down, but still looked annoyed. I looked at my date and whispered "This is getting weird. " She replied "Yeah. " Both guests were starting to look woozy, like they were about to pass out. The female guest's wine goblet fell to the floor with a loud clanking sound as she slumped over. The male looked over at her, frightened and angry. "What are you doing?! " He exclaimed, then looking at his own wine goblet just before passing out. The old men in religious garb started strapping them both into their chairs. I shouted "What the hell is going on here? " as my date grabbed my arm. The woman placed her hand on my arm, saying "It's ok, it's ok. This is normal. " I looked at her with confusion. The wolf-life creature in the carriage-cage was getting upset by my outburst, and was growling toward me. Back on the stage, the old men in religious garb started stripping their clothes off until they were completely naked. "Oh, what the Hell is this? " I exclaimed. Two of the naked old men picked up large knives, and walked in front of the couple in the chairs. Before I even knew what was happening, the old religious men thrust the knives into the couples' chests simultaneously, pulled them out, turned toward the crowd and wiped the bloody blades across their foreheads. They then started laughing, and the crowd cheered. "Oh my God! " I exclaimed, grabbing my date's arm. "We have to get out of here! " She looked at me in horror, with tears coming from her eyes. "Don't be frightened, " said the woman. "This is all part of the celebration. " The wolf creature was getting angrier and louder, still looking in my direction. I screamed "Let's go! " at my date. At this point, the woman shouted "Let her out! " as several men started opening the cage door of the carriage, to let the wolf free. We ran, hand in hand, back in the direction that we came from. I plowed through people as we ran back toward the entrance gate. We got through the gate and I slammed it shut. We continued running toward the parking lot. The funny part is, when I looked back, nobody was chasing after us. It was like they didn't think there was anything wrong. When we got to the car, I first unlocked her door to make sure she was safe inside, then unlocked mine and I jumped in. And unlike every horror movie I've ever seen, the car started on the first try. We sped away, leaving a dirt cloud in our wake. After a couple of minutes, I finally glanced over, and my date was looking tired. She was passing out. "Oh no, " I thought. "We drank the wine. " A few minutes later, I started feeling like I was about to pass out. Then I decided that we had a better chance of making it if I pulled over than if I passed out and crashed. So, I pulled over and called 911. At least, I think I did. I don't remember hanging up. I don't even remember talking to them. All I remember is being awoken by police busting out my window. EMS was on the scene and pulled us both out of the car, loading us into the back of an ambulance. That's the last thing I remember before the next day. When we woke in a hospital the next morning, I learned that our stomachs had been pumped as a preventative measure, as they didn't know what was in the wine that we drank. They had us on IVs all night to keep us hydrated. I told the police all about the festival, the murders, everything. I even gave them the address of the event that I punched into google maps the prior evening. Later that day, I received a call from them saying that they checked the address, but there was nothing there. I told them, "I know it's in the middle of nowhere, but it was down a dirt side drive to the left, right by where google said the address should be. You have to go through the drive and everything is back there in the field. " The officer hesitated for a few seconds, then replied, "We did see the side drive, and we did go through it. There's nothing back there. No people, no lights, no stages, no garbage left behind, nothing. We spent over an hour looking. There's just... nothing... there. I then grabbed my phone to bring up the festival group on the meet-up website. As you guessed it... Gone.

Audience Score=256 vote Story=Satire about the world of the super-rich Cast=Shirley Henderson, Sophie Cookson Duration=104 Minute 5,7 / 10. Greed vs bradley. Greed synonyms. Greed synonym.

GREED is one of seven basic character flaws or “dark” personality traits. We all have the potential for greedy tendencies, but in people with a strong fear of lack or deprivation, Greed can become a dominant pattern. What is greed? Greed is the tendency to selfish craving, grasping and hoarding. It is defined as: A selfish or excessive desire for more than is needed or deserved, especially of money, wealth, food, or other possessions [1] Other names for greed include avarice, covetousness and cupidity. Selfish and excessive desire is widely considered immoral, a violation of natural or divine law. For example, “avarice” is one of the seven deadly sins in Catholicism ( avarice: pleasing oneself with material acquisitions and possessions instead of pleasing God). And according to Buddhism, “craving” is a fundamental hindrance to enlightenment ( craving: compulsively seeking happiness through acquiring material things). As with the opposite chief feature of self-destruction, greed stems from a basic fear of life. To be exact, greed is driven by a fundamental sense of deprivation, a need for something that is lacking or unavailable. When this feeling of lack is particularly strong, a person can become utterly fixated on seeking what they “need”, always trying to get hold of the one thing that will finally eliminate the deep-rooted feeling of not having enough. That one thing could be money, power, sex, food, attention, knowledge … just about anything. It could be something concrete or abstract, real or symbolic. But it will be something very specific on which the entire need-greed complex becomes fixated. Once that happens, life becomes a quest to acquire as much of it as possible. Components of greed Like all chief features, greed involves the following components: Early negative experiences Misconceptions about the nature of self, life or others A constant fear and sense of insecurity A maladaptive strategy to protect the self A persona to hide all of the above in adulthood Early Negative Experiences In the case of greed, the early negative experiences typically consist of insufficient or inadequate nurturing in early childhood, perhaps enough to threaten the child’s survival. All infants are born with a natural desire for love, nurture, care, attention and interaction. In some cases, however, the source of such things—notably the caregiver—may be absent or unavailable. Perhaps not all of the time, but enough for the infant to experience the lack. Enough for the child to become terrified of never getting enough of what he or she needs. The situation could be natural and unavoidable, like the untimely death of a parent, or living through a time of famine. Alternatively, the situation could be deliberately imposed, such as willful neglect. Another example would be a mother who is too off-her-head on drugs to look after her child. Whatever the circumstances, the effect on the child is a sense of deprivation, unfulfilled need, of never having enough. Another common factor in the formation of greed is the availability of substitutes. Imagine, for example, a parent who fails to provide nurturing but – out of guilt – provides lots of gifts in the form of money, toys, chocolate, TV. In effect, the parent says “You cannot have me, you cannot have what you really need, but – hey – you can have this instead. ” Ultimately, the substitute is always inadequate. No amount of TV can make up for lack of human contact. No amount of chocolate can make up for lack of love. But the child learns to make do with whatever is available. Misconceptions From such experiences of deprivation and lack, a child comes to perceive life as being unreliable and limited — but also containing the missing ingredient for happiness: My well-being depends on me getting all that I desire. I cannot truly be myself, a whole person, until I get what has always been missing. Life is limited. There isn’t enough for everyone. I miss out because other people are taking my share, getting what is rightfully mine. Once I have it all, I will never lack anything ever again. Over time, the growing child might also become cynical about what life has to offer: All I ever get are unsatisfactory substitutes. I cannot trust anyone to give me what I need. If I am given a gift, there must be something wrong with it. Everything falls short of my requirements. Fear Based on the above misconceptions and early negative experiences, the child becomes gripped by a specific kind of fear. In this case, the fear is of lack — of having to go without something essential as there may not be enough of it to go around. What exactly “it” is depends upon the individual’s own idea of what it is they really need, but it will be something specific like love, attention, power, fame, money, and so on. Because of this constant fear, the individual will obsessively crave the “needed” thing. They will also tend to envy those who have that thing. Strategy The basic strategy for coping with this fear of lack is to acquire, possess and hoard the “needed” thing. Typically this involves: obsessively seeking the chosen substitute for the original lack; compulsively acquiring it; hoarding it; preventing others from acquiring it; criticising what is available (in the hope of eliciting something better); blaming others for failing to provide enough. Persona Finally, emerging into adulthood, the chief feature of greed puts on a socially-acceptable mask which says to the world, “I am not selfish. I am not greedy. I am not doing this for me. See how generous I am. See how my possessions make other people happy. ” In fact, the greedy person is never happy so long as the possibility of lack remains. The mask of greed can also manifest as criticism of others’ greed or selfishness. The chief feature thinks to itself: If it isn’t socially acceptable to crave and grasp and hoard, I shall go around criticising others who crave and grasp and hoard more obviously than me. That way, people won’t suspect how bad I really am. All people are capable of this kind of behaviour. When it dominates the personality, however, one is said to have a chief feature of greed. The survival instinct in greed Because the compulsion of greed is usually driven by some early, traumatising sense of deprivation that may be lost to memory, it often manifests only later in childhood, adolescence and adulthood as one of our most essential survival instincts comes into play: competition. Competition for resources is a universal instinct and one of the most important factors in biology. Different species can compete for the same watering hole, for example. Within the same species, males can compete for the same female, or for “top dog” position. At an instinctive level we are still like hunter-gatherers who survive against the odds by making sure we have what we need. The cave-dweller within us is still primed to hunt, catch, gather and hoard. We are also a tribal species who will instinctively take from other tribes as a desperate measure to feed our own. This is pretty much what all post-apocalyptic movies are showing us: take away civilisation, and we soon return to “acting like animals. ” (Except that animals, of course, animals don’t usually take more than they need. It’s not a very efficient use of energy. ) Greed in action Let’s now unpack the elements of greed in action to illustrate how it works and what it feels like. Compelling need By definition, greed is a compelling “need” to constantly acquire, consume or possess more of something than is actually necessary or justifiable. You would experience this subjectively as an all-consuming lust, hunger or craving for something (money, sex, food, power, fame, etc…). This might be triggered by suddenly seeing the object of your desire, or an opportunity to go after it. Underlying the desire, however, is a terrible insecurity, a primal fear of lack or deprivation, though this is likely to be more unconscious than conscious. On the surface there is just the compulsion to satisfy the need. Risky commitment When the “need” is being strongly felt, you become compelled to commit a great deal of time and energy to seeking and acquiring your thing, setting all else aside. The only clear course of action, it seems, is to try and satisfy this longing because, after all, it promises to give you that long-lost sense of security. Others might question your peculiar commitment and determination, given that it seems you are willing to risk everything over this personal obsession. But you can always find a way to argue the case: “This is important to me. It will make me happy. It will make you happy too. And if I do happen to end up with more than I need, I’ll just give some away… Everybody will thank me for it! ” Brief gratification Sometimes you might achieve success in getting what you seek. And in those moments when the elusive object of your desire is actually in your hands you experience truly intoxicating feelings of triumph and relief. However, these gratifying moments are all too brief… You feel that the “win” was just not enough. In fact, there is no such thing as enough. Despite all your best efforts, and despite every success, an abiding sense of security or fulfilment is never reached. The overwhelming desire is literally insatiable so long as the underlying fear is never addressed. Harsh realities You may then experience frustration at the transience of such pleasure, especially given the investment of time and energy. (“Was it really worth it? ”) You may experience shame and guilt over the damaging effects of your actions upon your relationships, reputation, financial security, etc. (“What was I thinking? ” “I’m hurting the very people I love. ” “I’m ruining my life when it’s all been going so well. ”) You may feel overwhelming anxiety over the uncertain future (“I’m on a slippery slope to hell”). All of this has the effect of evoking fear and insecurity, and a compelling need to fill that hole, and so the cycle begins again. You might experience all these at some level at once, or have different ones in your foreground at different times. Still, it is very comparable to a cycle of addiction, in that the desire becomes harder and harder to satisfy, so the target level of a “win” or a “fix” keeps going up, which in turn requires more and more investment of time, energy and money. There is also a greater cost to self-esteem, as you become more and more “enslaved” to the need. And of course, a greater cost to one’s other commitments, such as career and relationships, which compete for the same time and energy. By way of illustration, I came across this NY Times article by a guy called Sam Polk [2], a former hedge-fund trader, who describes the greed pattern in his own experience: “In my last year on Wall Street my bonus was $3. 6 million — and I was angry because it wasn’t big enough. I was 30 years old, had no children to raise, no debts to pay, no philanthropic goal in mind. I wanted more money for exactly the same reason an alcoholic needs another drink: I was addicted. ” An obsessive pursuit of wealth not only taps into our competitive survival instinct very neatly — seeking, hunting, catching, hoarding, winning, stealing if necessary… It also MAGNIFIES the sensations involved (desperation, excitement, thrill, triumph, reward) and it ACCELERATES the whole cycle, from what may have been days, weeks and even months (to acquire enough food to get through winter, say) to hours, minutes or even seconds (to win a jackpot). “When I walked onto that trading floor for the first time and saw the glowing flat-screen TVs, high-tech computer monitors and phone turrets with enough dials, knobs and buttons to make it seem like the cockpit of a fighter plane, I knew exactly what I wanted to do with the rest of my life. It looked as if the traders were playing a video game inside a spaceship; if you won this video game, you became what I most wanted to be — rich. ” The satisfaction, he says, wasn’t just about the money. Soon, it was more about the power. “Because of how smart and successful I was, it was someone else’s job to make me happy. ” Note the sense of entitlement to being looked after, a common factor in many forms of greed. Positive and Negative Poles In the case of greed, the positive pole is a state which may be referred to as DESIRE, EGOISM or APPETITE, while the negative pole is one of VORACITY or GLUTTONY. + desire / egoism / appetite + | GREED – voracity / gluttony – Egoism (not to be confused with egotism) is state of self-centred acquisitiveness: I will have what I want and need. It is the opposite of altruism. Why is this a positive pole? Because in moderation, satisfying one’s own needs and desires is part of what life is about. We are not all here to be self-sacrificing saints. We are here to make choices, and most of our choices will be driven by our own needs and desires. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with having a “healthy appetite”. In fact, it is healthier to be driven by one’s desires rather than one’s fears. Voracity or gluttony is a state of excessive egoism, unjustified acquisitiveness. Not only does it cause one to acquire more than is ever going to be necessary, it can also lead to others being deprived of the same thing. Moreover, once the negative pole of greed takes control of the personality, it does not care who it hurts in the process of getting what it “needs”. All things are secondary to the fear of lack. This is why, of all the chief features, greed is the hardest on others in one’s life. How to handle greed? Greed isn’t simply naked selfishness. It is multi-faceted and multi-layered, with elements that may be buried far below the level of everyday awareness. So if one is to get on top of a pattern of greed then one ought to consider this complexity. Here are some suggestions, in no particular order: Understand that while greed is a compulsion, you still have free will. You have many choices available you you. Try not to justify or rationalise your actions by saying that you have no other choice. You do have other choices, it’s just that you allow the intensity of “need” and the fear underlying it to hijack your mind, overriding your ability to step back and ask yourself, What are my options here? Identify how the cycle of greed works within you, if you can. What triggers the craving? How conscious are you of your options? How do you convince yourself and others that your compulsive striving isn’t irrational? What happens when you actually achieve success? Does it always turn out to be just too little, and the elation too brief? Does it soon turn into frustration? Does it deepen your insecurity? Each part of the cycle is a falsehood, a weak link that can be broken. Get a hold of the idea “ There is no such thing as enough. ” See if you can feel its presence in your own mind, or some variation of it. Then affirm to yourself how illogical and destructive it is. See if you can decide for yourself what “enough” is – a specific level of income, for example. Notice any resistance to that and see where it’s coming from (competitiveness? fear of losing? fear of insufficiency? ) Try to reduce the time you spend looking for opportunities to satisfy the craving. Avoid spending time looking at the things that turn your craving on. Avoid stimulating the desire with thoughts of competing for the prize. For example, who cares what your neighbours earn? — it’s none of your business. Avoid hanging out with friends, relatives or colleagues who boast about their own achievements. Try not to feed any thoughts about getting more and more. Instead of giving your attention to things you want but don’t have, be mindful to take real pleasure in what you do have. In other words, don’t just tick the boxes for the things you’ve acquired, then focus on what’s next on the list, but relish the things that you already have, with gusto. If you have a private swimming pool, love swimming in that pool! One of the factors in greed is a disappointment even in great success because of the background thought that there is always more to be had. To avoid that, immerse yourself in the sensory and visceral pleasures of what you do have — let your instincts know that they have been well met at a physical level! Also, notice any good things in your life which you did not acquire through your own striving. Some people with an obsessive need for intimacy, for example, may be born into great wealth but not even notice it because they are so fixated on resolving the lack of intimacy. So, pay attention to what you have. If gratitude works for you, express gratitude as a daily exercise. If not gratitude, then appreciation — express (just to yourself is OK) your appreciation for the good things you have. Let the appreciation grow — you will find yourself feeling happier. Address the underlying dread. See a therapist if necessary, or just try introspection and journal-writing if you have the self-discipline. See if you can identify the “lack” or whatever it is that you fear so terribly. Naming things is empowering. Find the association between this anxiety and your greed-type actions. Know that you have the choice not to act on that fear. You may also be able to shed a realistic light on the fear so that it diminishes – “I used to crave food because I got so little. Now I can afford to feed myself, I know that I’m not going to starve to death as an adult, and so there is no need to gorge on food at every opportunity. ” Bring the light of conscious awareness and choice to your inner drives and conflicts. Finally, if you are aware of having a compulsion towards greed, try, try, try not to judge yourself too harshly for it. Greed is one of the traps that anyone can fall into. It’s not as easy to embrace as, say, self-deprecation because it so outwardly and blatantly selfish, which is socially unacceptable, even if the individual doing it hates himself for it. But just hating yourself for it solves nothing. However, being able to come to terms with it — to say “ I have this problem. It’s like an addiction, but I’m dealing with it. I’m getting on top of it. I’m bigger than this thing. And I’m going to make sure no one is ever harmed by it again, including me. ” — that’s heading towards a solution. As a secular psychological concept, greed is an inordinate desire to acquire or possess more than one needs. The degree of inordinance is related to the inability to control the reformulation of "wants" once desired "needs" are eliminated. Erich Fromm described greed as "a bottomless pit which exhausts the person in an endless effort to satisfy the need without ever reaching satisfaction. " It is typically used to criticize those who seek excessive material wealth, although it may apply to the need to feel more excessively moral, social, or otherwise better than someone else. The purpose for greed, and any actions associated with it, is possibly to deprive others of potential means (perhaps, of basic survival and comfort) or future opportunities accordingly, or to obstruct them therefrom, thus insidious and tyrannical or otherwise having a negative connotation. Alternately, the purpose could be defense or counteraction from such dangerous, potential negotiation in matters of questionable agreeability. A consequence of greedy activity may be an inability to sustain any of the costs or burdens associated with that which has been or is being accumulated, leading to a backfire or destruction, whether of self or more generally. So, the level of "inordinance" of greed pertains to the amount of vanity, malice or burden associated with it. Views [ edit] Thomas Aquinas says that greed "is a sin against God, just as all mortal sins, in as much as man condemns things eternal for the sake of temporal things. " [1]: A1 In Dante's Purgatory, the avaricious penitents were bound and laid face down on the ground for having concentrated too much on earthly thoughts. Greed can also be represented by the fox. Meher Baba dictated that "Greed is a state of restlessness of the heart, and it consists mainly of craving for power and possessions. Possessions and power are sought for the fulfillment of desires. Man is only partially satisfied in his attempt to have the fulfillment of his desires, and this partial satisfaction fans and increases the flame of craving instead of extinguishing it. Thus greed always finds an endless field of conquest and leaves the man endlessly dissatisfied. The chief expressions of greed are related to the emotional part of man. " [2] Ivan Boesky famously defended greed in an 18 May 1986 commencement address at the UC Berkeley 's School of Business Administration, in which he said, "Greed is all right, by the way. I want you to know that. I think greed is healthy. You can be greedy and still feel good about yourself". [3] This speech inspired the 1987 film Wall Street, which features the famous line spoken by Gordon Gekko: "Greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. " [4] Inspirations [ edit] Scavenging and hoarding of materials or objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are all actions that may be inspired by greed. Such misdeeds can include simony, where one profits from soliciting goods within the actual confines of a church. A well-known example of greed is the pirate Hendrick Lucifer, who fought for hours to acquire Cuban gold, becoming mortally wounded in the process. He died of his wounds hours after having transferred the booty to his ship. [5] Genetics [ edit] Some research suggests there is a genetic basis for greed. It is possible people who have a shorter version of the ruthlessness gene (AVPR1a) may behave more selfishly. [6] See also [ edit] References [ edit] ^ Thomas Aquinas. "The Summa Theologica II-II. Movies | ‘Greed’ Review: Millionaires at Their Best. Or Worst. Steve Coogan offers familiar comedic pleasures in his role as a rag-trade millionaire micromanaging his 60th birthday celebration in this movie that parallels “The Big Short” and “The Laundromat. ” Credit... Amelia Troubridge/Sony Pictures Classics Greed Directed by Michael Winterbottom Comedy, Drama R 1h 44m Although Erich von Stroheim’s mauled 1924 masterpiece “ Greed ” is nearly 100 years old, it is sufficiently monumental that adopting its title can still seem like an attempted flex. In the case of Michael Winterbottom’s new movie, a satire starring a frequent collaborator, Steve Coogan, it’s less an allusion than a direct, blatant and bitter statement of theme. Coogan plays Sir Richard McCreadie, a coarse but not wholly dumb rag-trade millionaire micromanaging his own 60th birthday celebration. In this framework Winterbottom, who wrote the script with Sean Gray providing “additional material, ” constructs a time-traveling, format-shifting biopic with a from-humble-beginnings hook. Some of the eat-the-rich barbs here are about a decade stale. If you think you’ve heard McCreadie’s “I don’t need drugs, I am drugs” boast, you have — from Salvador Dalí. But Coogan brings his usual comic reliability to his characterization, as does Isla Fisher as the rich man’s predictably estranged wife, and they wring laughs from the material. Like “Casino, ” “The Big Short” and “The Laundromat, ” this movie has a strong pedagogic component, to lay bare the most rank excesses of contemporary capitalism. Here, as it happens, “Greed” is at its strongest. The movie effectively demonstrates that the open markets pushed by Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher were not constructed with the expectation, or even the hope, that a rapacious actor in the McCreadie mode would behave decently within them. “Greed” also features cogent explanations of debt restructuring: the way banks throw dumpsters full of cash to rich “entrepreneurs” while never offering so much as a rope ladder of credit to the poor who work for these characters. The final sequence detailing income inequality and sweatshop exploitation in the fashion industry is a powerful kick in the teeth. Greed Rated R; these rich people are all kinds of vulgar. Running time: 1 hour 44 minutes.
